Barber Superbike Track Walk

Barber Superbike Track Walk, originally uploaded by rldannand.

Josh Herrin and Josh Hayes lead a walking group around the track at Barber Motorsports Park. Josh did most of the talking. He often would describe the intricacies of every inch of the surface. He would describe avoiding pavement seams and talk about piloting the superbike through tiny sections at full speed... The little boy to Hayes' left followed him the whole way - asking questions about everything.

Not much further down the track, Josh Herrin (Green Hat) asked about whether or not it was possible to climb the fencing. I told him that Helio Castroneves, 3-time Indy 500 Champion, climbed most of the way up the fence after winning here in 2010. "Did it give way? Did he fall back?" he asked. I said "No. It held him and all of his racing gear very easily. It was really cool. He always climbs the fence when he wins. Before the race he said he would have to put some thought into where to climb up."

The next day Josh Herrin won his race on the last lap in the last two turns! And of course...

Here's the news article quote:

"Josh Herrin is from Georgia but considers Barber Motorsports Park his home track. So he was especially pumped up when he beat Danny Eslick by half a bike length to win Sunday's Daytona Sportbike race for his fourth win of the year. He was so pumped he took a victory lap with the checkered flag, then stopped on the backstretch to climb the fence.

Herrin took off his gloves and tossed them to fans who had run down from the shady hillside to greet him.

"During the Track Walk (on Saturday) I told some fans I'd climb the fence if I won," Herrin said. "So thought it was pretty cool to get them to come out from the shade."

Eslick, who won Saturday's race, led every lap Sunday except the last, when Herrin finally got by him.
