Courtyard Highway 25 bar/restaurant

Took a scenic ride through the hills today. Just happened to be near where I used to ride when "29 Dreams" was open. Hello! Someone opened up shop on the existing property. It's now called Courtyard Highway 25.
I probably won't see upper 60's again for quite a while. Hopefully they will still be open when I ride through there again...

I parked right by the guys playing music. They didn't mind. MY bike is QUIET.

Parked at Work

Parked at Work, originally uploaded by rldannand.

I know it looks a little lonely... but this is a great place to park. The studio blocks a lot of weather and the surface is concrete (no sinking into hot /soft asphalt). It's just out of the way of a "Patch " live shot. We will sometimes put a reporter to the right of my bike to be live in front of the Birmingham Skyline. The mountain (my station sits on top of) drops off just to the left side of the photo frame.

2011 Kawasaki Concours ABS

2011 Kawasaki Concours ABS, originally uploaded by rldannand.

After a week of planning, financing and insurance shopping - I finally bit on a new motorcycle. I have been thinking about this type of motorcycle since last fall. I really got the bug when I visited another dealer and demoed a few bikes. I saw this one online and it was too good of a deal to pass up. I rode through a thundering deluge of rain the last 6 miles home. No worries - traction control! The sun popped out as I parked the Connie for the first time in the driveway and I was treated to a double rainbow. No pot o' gold on the seat...

Barber Superbike Track Walk

Barber Superbike Track Walk, originally uploaded by rldannand.

On June 18th 2011, after the races for the day were complete.. the races from most of the teams treated folks to a walk around the track. Just a $10 donation for tornado relief. My group consisted of Josh Hayes (2010 Superbike Champion), Josh Herrin, Jason Disalvo and Reese Wacker. Josh talked the whole way around the track.

This concrete was freshly painted right before the superbike teams showed up this week. the black marks are from the knee-pucks.

Hitting this corner at full speed and the front wheel loaded for grip is a nightmare thanks to the seeping water over a slippery seam...

Josh Hayes shows what he sees on the track at speed and how he determines the best line in different situations...

Josh Herring (Green hat) and Josh Hayes talk to the walking group about using the concrete to set up entry into the right-hand corner entering the back stretch. Hitting the grass will be VERY BAD!

Josh Herrin and Josh Hayes lead a walking group around the track at Barber Motorsports Park. Josh did most of the talking. He often would describe the intricacies of every inch of the surface. He would describe avoiding pavement seams and talk about piloting the superbike through tiny sections at full speed... The little boy to Hayes' left followed him the whole way - asking questions about everything.

Not much further down the track, Josh Herrin (Green Hat) asked about whether or not it was possible to climb the fencing. I told him that Helio Castroneves, 3-time Indy 500 Champion, climbed most of the way up the fence after winning here in 2010. "Did it give way? Did he fall back?" he asked. I said "No. It held him and all of his racing gear very easily. It was really cool. He always climbs the fence when he wins. Before the race he said he would have to put some thought into where to climb up."

The next day Josh Herrin won his race on the last lap in the last two turns! And of course...

Here's the news article quote:

"Josh Herrin is from Georgia but considers Barber Motorsports Park his home track. So he was especially pumped up when he beat Danny Eslick by half a bike length to win Sunday's Daytona Sportbike race for his fourth win of the year. He was so pumped he took a victory lap with the checkered flag, then stopped on the backstretch to climb the fence.

Herrin took off his gloves and tossed them to fans who had run down from the shady hillside to greet him.

"During the Track Walk (on Saturday) I told some fans I'd climb the fence if I won," Herrin said. "So thought it was pretty cool to get them to come out from the shade."

Eslick, who won Saturday's race, led every lap Sunday except the last, when Herrin finally got by him.

Warm Day ride to Barbers

Warm Day ride to Barbers, originally uploaded by rldannand.

It's too warm not to ride! 75* and pure sun in January. New Scorpion helmet is on the seat. Barbers seemed like a great place to chill for about a half an hour. There weren't any vehicles "racing" around the track. A quiet moment.

75 degrees in January! I love it.
Pulled the VStrom off of the battery tender to ride for about an hour and a half.
